Instructional Context: The target learner population is middle school (6th - 8th grade) students. Educators will use the game as a team building exercise to supplement the American History curriculum. The instructional setting is a multi-player environment in which the entire class may participate using their school's local area network. Learners will access and complete the game over the course of one semester. This instructional game is designed to immerse the learner in a historically accurate setting while presenting various issues that settlers had to overcome. In addition, learners will be assigned to groups to foster team building skills. The primary learning outcome is to provide learners with the skills necessary to be able to describe the environment of early 17th century settlers, interpret world and local events affecting the settlement, and predict what the effects of these events may have presented to the settlers. A secondary learning outcome is for the learners to improve their communication skills via group work.
